Printers' Type Cases

Type cases, manufactured from around 1890 to the 1960s, are wooden trays divided into sections to hold the various letters of a typeface. All type cases have been finished by hand and have been fitted with a hanger. Well constructed (because metal type is heavy), the cases were stored in vertical racks, grouping typestyles into families. If you've ever wondered why we use the term upper case for capital letters, it's probably clear now!
